3 Easy Exercises to Help You Bomb Proof Your Horse

When a horse spooks or shies he is dangerous not only to himself and his rider, but also to others, this is especially so if the horse is ridden on roadsides. Horses, being prey animals, often respond to objects they perceive as being threatening by shying and bolting from them. Some horses shy at virtually anything and they are often deemed as problem horses that are dangerous to ride. Horses can spook from everything, from plastic bags to wheelie bins, if the horse finds the object scary, he will everything in his power to avoid it.There are some things you can do to desensitize your horse. This problem horse training is ideally started when the horse is young and in training as it will ensure a spook proof horse. Begin by lunging the horse for a few minutes to allow him to work off any excessive energy. Leave a halter and lead rope on the horse and approach him slowly with an old saddle pad or blanket allowing him to sniff it. Work at the horse’s pace and if he spooks or takes a step back, introduce the blanket again slowly until he is comfortable having it close to him.Once he’s more at ease around the blanket, you can start moving it around and swinging it slowly. This will help desensitize the horse against flapping objects. The horse will most probably feel uncomfortable and may even shy, so be patient and work with him until he is accustomed to having the blanket swung around him.The next step is to touch the horse with the swinging blanket, gently swing it onto his back and all over his body. Once the horse accepts the blanket on his head you’re halfway there! Place the blanket by his feet to help desensitize him to objects under his feet, this is an essential part of the desensitization exercise. That’s it; reward him profusely for a job well done! The next desensitizing exercise you should try is to use a soft rope and work with it in much the same way as you did with the saddle pad or blanket. This teaches the horse to tolerate having a rope moving around his legs and body. Teaching your horse to tolerate this type of sensation can prove to be lifesaving if tack fails and the horse finds himself with bits of tack flying around him. This makes the horse much safer in dangerous situations when tack breaks. Throw the rope on the ground and in-between the horses’ legs and belly until he is no longer afraid of it. If the horse allows you to move the rope around his face and head, you’ve successfully completed this exercise.Last but certainly not least is the plastic bag. The majority of horses shy from plastic bags and by doing this exercise you will help your horse overcome his fear of fluttering objects. Show the bag to your horse and allow him to smell it, then tie it to a long lunge whip and wave it around while holding your horse on long lead rope. The horse will inevitably shy and try to get away from the terrifying object. Keep shaking it around and the horse will eventually become accustomed to having it around him, once he’s calm he will allow you to touch him with the plastic bag. Move it around his body and under his belly, when he allows you to touch his head with it, you’re done.Work at your horse’s pace and always end your training session on a positive note and with a lot of pace. Never pressure your horse in a difficult situation as you may cause him irreparable psychological damage. Make sure you do these exercises regularly even after the horse has become desensitized to ensure the horse doesn’t fall back into his old familiar patterns.

How to Bandage a Horse’s Legs for Exercise
International dressage star, Laura Bechtolsheimer, shows us precisely how to apply exercise bandages over pads, which she prefers to boots, for her dressage horses. How to Make Your Horse Coat Shine
‘Pig Oil’ is a well kept secret, revealed here by dressage rider, Hannah Biggs. It’s actually a mineral oil which was originally used to make pigs shine in the show ring and has been used on heavy horses to keep their feathers silky white and shiny. Hannah shows how to apply it to make your horse’s coat gleam and catch the judge’s eye! She explains its many uses which, she says, include a treatment for sweet itch, minor cuts and rug rubs, as well as restoring hair. (01:35)
This is a short, cute piece which we hope you’ll enjoy, whether or not you need to hog a mane. Wayne Garrick (eventer, hunt groom and Horse Hero blogger) shows us how it’s done. Spanish Braiding for Your Horse’s Mane
Dressage rider, Hannah Biggs, demonstrates how to correctly braid a Spanish stallion’s mane for competition. However, she points out that on a daily basis she just divides Torri’s mane into long plaits to keep it out of the reins. Hannah has instructions from his owners not to trim or pull his mane at all, so Torri is shown here in all his glory. It takes a strong pair of hands to get this lot under control but the end result is a work of art. (05:24)

Train Wild Horses Book Review- Can This Book Help You Train The Wildest Of Horses?

When you are considering buying and training a wild horse you have to take into consideration all the requirements to successfully tame your horse. This can be a very difficult task if your horse is not used to humans or physical contact. Many of them will not let you go near them or touch them until they are familiar with you and completely trust you.My uncle recently purchased a wild horse to put on his 2 acres of land. He wanted to give his new horse the ability to run free and enjoy all the open space but he always wanted to eventually ride him. The problem was that the horse was very wild and whenever any person would come near him he would immediately run away. This was very difficult since he had tons of open space to run and get away from us.We made many attempts to gently get him to come to us so we could get to know each other but he would rather keep to himself and keep his space from us. We looked into a Wild Horse Training Book it let us train him within reasonable time and now he is very tame.

Karen shops frequently and loves to tell her experience to the world. She is a full time student and resides in beautiful Colorado.
Continue Reading » There are tools for every trade, and the right set of horse training aids can make the difference between success and frustration. Don’t be tempted to skimp on this area of investment.
All horse training is serious business. The average animal outweighs the trainer by an impressive margin, and the horse training aids you choose can help prevent serious injury.
– Rope Halter
The most basic of horse training aids is the halter and lead rope combination. A rope halter will facilitate tying and leading, and works better than a flat halter because it will prevent leaning while at the same time being comfortable for the horse. The halter is placed on the animal’s head.
– Lead Rope
The lead rope is attached to the halter and used to direct or “steer” the horse. In many ways this horse training aid is like a leash.
– Longe Line
The term longeing refers to the set of training skills used to teach a horse direction, posture, and how to yield or move off pressure. And the longe line is the training aid used to accomplish this.
– Progress String
In most cases, this horse training aid is a thin, braided rope with an eye splice at one end and leather “popper” at the other. This device is used in many ways.
You can apply a progress string as a visual aid. For instance, to let the horse know when he is in your space.
Also you can use this tool to make physical contact from the saddle. The progress string is not heavy enough to cause a horse any pain, but the popper end make s a distinct noise when applied, and can work in place of a crop.
– Large Rubber Ball
Perhaps a less traditional horse training aid is a large rubber ball, like the kind you can buy at any toy store. This aid is great for conditioning the horse’s nerves.
You can roll the ball around in front of the horse, and even roll it gently into the horse’s legs. Also, while in the saddle, you can direct the horse into the ball and gently guide the animal to move the ball around with its legs.
This sort of training will help you desensitize your horse to unexpected movement and objects, thus decreasing the likelihood of getting spooked.
– Plastic Tarp
Another tool for developing the horse’s courage, a common plastic tarp is an inexpensive and effective training aid. Start by laying the tarp out in the training area and leading your horse over it, or even asking the horse to walk over the tarp on its own.
As you know, a tarp can get pretty noisy when walked on. And it will create the illusion of strange footing.
You could even slowly work into an exercise where you place the tarp over your horse’s back, possibly completely covering him or her with the tarp. This not only develops the horses’ trust in you, it also simulates noisy brush and other riding situations and helps desensitize the horse to such conditions.
This list of horse training aids will give you plenty to work with in the beginning. Of course as training progresses you will need more advanced tools and tactics.
