How Acquiring Equestrian Training And Horse Back Rider Training Knowledge Can Benefit You!

Horse people spend years trying to find out information and techniques from different trainers for a few tips that help them with their horse back riding training before they ‘chance’ upon training that actually works for them successfully that they can instantly understand and practise the moves.
How many times do you see people practising the same move whether general riding, dressage, western, western pleasure or cutting and they repeat the same moves over and over with no improvement ‘locking’ their horse into a frame and getting mediocre results.
Then they sell their horse and buy a new one and unless the horse can ‘teach’ the rider the ‘move’ the same thing happens. When an experienced trainer hops on the horse they can execute moves that you didn’t know your horse was capable of – This is the SECRET- to learn and understand the required thinking and aids to ask and communicate to your horse and unite this with your correct body position that doesn’t lock or stiffen their frame.
Do you see people kick and hit their horse to move it and when the horse finally moves they jerk on the reins, and pull the mouth to make the horse uncomfortable – it’s no wonder that the horse doesn’t want to move!
Imagine being able to dance in self carriage and never having to continually repeat exercises with your horse, which they see as undeserved punishment! And better still, having the correct riding seat and the respect from your horse so it will move forwards willingly as you lift your energy!
This is why when you have the opportunity to acquire quality training information – You should take it- Read it – Understand it- Plan it and Practise it!
How do you know when the training offered is quality equestrian and horse back riding knowledge that is easily understandable to you?
A good trainer will tell you about the results they have obtained with other horses. The information that they provide will be clear and concise, being easy for you to understand as they discuss what you don’t want with your horse and then what you do want! You can understand clearly how to implement the training information with your horse, with examples of improvement being discussed with so you can see how to progress to that point and when it is obtained. Training tips and a free mailing list should be available to you – so you can communicate easily.
Most importantly great equestrian training is so substantial that it caters for horse back riders and horses of all equestrian disciplines – Western, English, Western Pleasure, Cutting, Reining, Hacking etc. to give breakthroughs and advance horse and horse back rider performance. Lets say a horse won’t go forwards properly, this isn’t a particular problem associated with one equestrian discipline -i.e dressage – it’s a communication and respect issue that can happen to all riders in any equestrian discipline – the equestrian rider needs to understand the theory and comprehend the bodily-kinesthetic knowledge of the moves – how to apply the training and aids, and know what to expect from the horse.
These key areas of training need to be available to the horse back rider in unison allowing an advance in equestrian training and performance, good horse training will equip you in all these areas – ending frustration created from no advance in horse back riding skills – due to only part of the training information being available to the horse back rider.

Equestrian Accidents: Has Falling Off Your Horse Become A Bad Habit?

Recently, I came across a tread in a forum that stopped me dead in my tracks. It was about falling off. One contributor complained that she fell of regularly, sometimes even several times during a lesson. I was amazed; I couldn’t quite figure it out.
Was she much younger than me to be able to allow herself the luxury of falling out with such regularity and risk severe injury? Was she very good at falling, like a martial arts expert, so that she never got injured? Was each fall a real fall, or was she exaggerating the frequency and severity of her falls? I have seen “falls” that can at best accurately be described as slip-offs, where the only part of the rider that is injured is her pride.
Falling off always results in injury, if not physically, then mentally.
Maybe it has become a habit, for both horse and rider. Maybe it is by now even a form of communication between them. And where does the instructor come into all this, allowing it to go on? I was under the impression that a horse that dumps a rider regularly is a seriously disrespectful horse and that this sort of behavior should not be allowed to continue.
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that this rider allows her horse to walk all over her, risking injury to both herself and her horse.
So often, we replicate the way we behave amongst other people in the way we behave towards our horses. If we allow other people to take advantage of us, because we lack self-respect, we allow our horse to do so too. Except in the latter case, we risk serious injury; mentally and physically.
Tackling this problem will not be an easy exercise. Firstly, the rider should understand that she should allow nothing but the most respectful behavior from her horse (as well as from everyone else), because she deserves it. And secondly, she should demand only the very best performance from herself.
We’re really good at demanding the best from others, but we often give ourselves a bit more slack. We allow excuses for our own and our horse’s behavior to hold us back, and then we use those same excuses to explain why we haven’t become the successful riders that we want to be. It’s not surprising that we try to go a little easier on ourselves since we already feel pressured and overwhelmed by our obligations and the expectations of others.
Demanding the best from ourselves is not the same as expecting perfection or never being satisfied with our riding progress. It’s not about being unreasonable with ourselves or trying to push ourselves or our horses beyond our true capabilities. Demanding the best from ourselves is about being honest about our capabilities, about learning how to stretch our limits and refusing to buy into excuses that limit our potential.
Today, take a look at your own accomplishments, and assess your and your horse’s true strengths. Have you been pushing yourself as hard as you can? Or have you been slacking off because it seems like too much work to step out of your comfort zone? Has falling of become such a habit that it forms part of your comfort zone?
If you are honest with yourself, you may realize that you have not been pushing yourself as hard as you can, and therefore you haven’t accomplished as much as you are truly capable of. Changing this is as simple as demanding the best from yourself, starting right now.
It all boils down to a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence. Riders, who have lost their riding confidence for whatever reason, should work on it pro-actively. Although there are many books available on the subject, it is difficult to increase our self-confidence all in one go. It is better to do so gradually. An equestrian self-confidence e-course, spread out over several weeks, in combination with a reputable horse training e-course, will allow both you and your horse to adapt in your own good time.

Equestrian Distractions in a “horse-crazy” Country

If you love horses, it doesn’t get any better than this: sea, sun, and a steady mount, a vision of pleasure and relaxation. In fact, there’s virtually no limit to the horse-drawn daydream you can bring to life in Costa Rica. Perhaps an afternoon ride alongside a clear mountain stream, the morning mists retreating to reveal a majestic vista of valley and volcano. Or how about a brisk beach ride in the cool of a coastal morning, greeted by the booming hoots of the howler monkeys and the splash of diving pelicans as you veer into the shade of a giant ceiba, the Mayan tree of life. There’s no doubt that if you are so inclined, much of your exploration of this beautiful country can best be done on horseback.
Horse lovers will find many Costa Ricans who share their persuasion, and no small wonder. Horses have played a central role in Costa Rican history and culture since the arrival of the first Spanish settlers in the 16th century. From coastal towns to cloud forest passes, you are sure to notice that horses continue to be a principal means of transportation for quite a few Costa Ricans. Even among those with more frenetic modern schedules, sentimental ties to the horse remain strong. Many urban and semi-urban Costa Ricans whose families have long left the farm nevertheless keep a steed in a stable to saddle-up in their spare time.
Costa Rica’s frequent fairs and festivals typically feature several horse events, the most popular of which is undoubtedly the tope (literally, the “bump”), a rollicking horse parade in which horse lovers of all stripes, from country cowboys to city slickers, can don their fanciest duds and prance stirrup-to-stirrup through the streets. The comfort and ease with which rich and poor “bump” and mingle en masse reflects not only Costa Rica’s relative social equality but also the ongoing cultural emphasis on honoring agricultural traditions. It is the same impulse to hold the land and those who work it close to their hearts, to remain humble regardless of station, which prompts even wealthy Costa Rican families to take their youngsters to pick coffee at least once a year.
Costa Ricans’ reverence for the horse is also reflected in national musical tastes, among which the ranchera is a perennial favorite. The traditional music of the mounted campesinos (country folk) from the deserts of northern Mexico to the Argentine pampas, ranchera music punctuates its stories of valor and betrayal with surging horns, enthusiastic vocal whoops, and exaggerated sobs. With songs such as “My Shining Cinnamon Steed” and “The Famous Black Stallion,” ranchera music is more likely to be an ode to a favorite horse rather than a paean to romantic love. Costa Rica counts among its native-born one of the few women superstars of the genre, the gun-toting, cigar-smoking Chavela Vargas, a close friend of Frida Kahlo who, after decades of success throughout Latin America, finally made her 2003 Carnegie Hall debut at age 83. Anyone interested in understanding ranchera’s popular appeal should attend one of the several ranchera festivals Costa Rica hosts each year throughout the country, delightful showcases of stirring music, superb singing, and impressive horsemanship.
Some who are choosing Costa Rica as “the” place to live are drawn precisely because of its horse-friendly ways. “We have noticed an increase in inquiries from people looking for horse properties,” says Pamela Wright, co-owner with her husband, Terry, of Beach Properties of Costa Rica. Just why that might be Tanya Herrington, owner of the Finca Más Tranquila (No Worries) horse farm outside Quepos, is quick to explain: “You really bond with nature riding in the countryside here. There’s nothing like it!” Tanya designed her wide-windowed home to sit atop the stables, allowing her to keep close watch on her horses and take best advantage of a great view.
Ray and Elizabeth Moss of Nosara say that Costa Ricans’ boundless enthusiasm for horses helped convince them to relocate here from the wine country of California, bringing their three horses with them (see “Journeying With Horses to Nosara” in current issue). “Everywhere I ride, people just come on over to chat and check out the horses,” says Elizabeth. “They love them…it’s just a horse-crazy country.”
Those who decide to buy their horses here will find a healthy and varied market, with prices beginning at only a few hundred dollars for horses that elsewhere would be worth much more. Indeed, it seems that the world is discovering what Costa Ricans have long known, that the country’s native Iberoamerican breeds are strong, beautiful, and spirited. Demand is growing both domestically and internationally, and top prices can reach $35,000. Sign of the growing reputation of this breed is the fact that singer Vicente Fernández, the Mexican king of ranchera music, traveled to Costa Rica to bring home a Costa Rican Iberoamerican to his ranch in Mexico, a fitting tribute to a worthy horse.
Riding is easy to arrange, no matter where you are. It is safe to say there is not a town or hamlet throughout this horse-loving nation without opportunities for recreational riding. More formal equestrian clubs featuring horse-boarding, riding lessons, and training and competitions in dressage and jumping have long been in existence throughout the Central Valley, and are now to be found in Guanacaste and other areas as well.
