If there is one thing that Jason is proficient at it is Float Loading. He has seen it all when it comes to horses that won’t get on a float. He has been called out by councils to get stray horses of the side of the road that they can’t even catch. He has been called by women who have tried everything and many other trainers to get their horse on to no avail and succeeded. In fact there’s not been a horse yet he hasn’t been able to put onto the float. You see, as Jason says it’s not about the float, it’s about the communication and respect you have with the horse on the ground.
Recently, he visited a lady who had not yet been able to float a horse she had purchased, Jason took the horse into a yard for about 45 minutes and did some ground work exercises, came back to the float and the horse self-loaded.
Ground work is so important when teaching your horse to float. Below is a video you can watch to show you a couple of the techniques Jason uses.
Floating loading is one of the biggest issues we see at our centre and not hard to solve. Horses and Ponies can be difficult to load it’s against their nature and instinct to enter such a small space. So if you need help call Jason on T: (03) 5773 4236
Float/Trailor loading can be the most time consuming, anxiety building and confidence buster for many people in the equine industry no matter what the discipline.
It doesn’t have to be.
The 5 Simple Things to Remember
1. Allocate 50% more time to the process than you first thought
2. Think about the psychology behind why horses might not want to be inside a metal cave on wheels. (They are the second most flight animal to deers in the world)
3. Check what skills and tasks you and your horse need to practice before loading.
4. Take Action – be confident and ensure your horse trusts you.
5. Make sure you have the right equipment. You need a rope halter, training stick or whip, at least a 3.6m quality lead rope for time and feel and you need TIME.
