Understanding the saddle?

The structure that you put on an animal’s back to support the rider or other types of load is called a saddle. When one speaks of saddles, it is commonly associated with horses. But any kind of animal that could be ridden on its back has its own corresponding type of saddle. Horse saddles are a crucial piece of equipment for anyone serious about horse training.

There are two main types of saddles – the English saddle and Western saddle. These are the two types of saddle primarily used in the equestrian world, although there are many types of horse saddles used worldwide. In other nations, saddles of different designs exist. Saddles differ greatly among various ethnic groups and nationalities. It can be fun to learn about how each one is utilized.

Ordinarily, choosing what saddle to use should depend on the kind of riding you intend to do with your horse. Even narrowing it down to English or Western riding, saddles can still be broken up in many categories such as for dressage and show, endurance, pleasure or general purpose. Some common horse saddle terms you should familiarize yourself with are pommel, cantle, horn and cinch.

The English Horse Saddle

In Olympic equestrian events, the English saddle is the main type of saddle used. As the name suggests, this is the favored type among the majority of English riders. However, the English saddle can still be categorized into several more specific styles depending on the kind of event that is involved. Whether it is for show jumping, hunter jumper, eventing, dressage, horse racing, saddle seat, or polo, an appropriate type of saddle is consequently used.

The Western Horse Saddle

The Stock saddle or Western saddle is the most commonly used variety in the United States. This is the type of saddle you will see used by cowboys on cattle ranches. Today, it is used in a variety of western riding activities. Distinctively, western saddles don’t have as much padding underneath and must be used with saddle blankets or pads so that they can be comfortable for the horse. They do provide much more support for the rider.

Western saddles have stirrups that are sturdier and can utilize numerous cinches depending on what they are being used for. The horn present on the front is one major factor that distinguishes this type of saddle from its English counterpart. The horn is originally used to tie a lariat when roping cattle.

Finding the Right Size

The tree of the saddle, is the frame on which the saddle is constructed. It is usually made of wood or sometimes fiberglass and then covered with leather. The frame is made to fit both the rider and the horse.

Finding the saddle that fits may require more work than you may think. An ill-fitting saddle can cause injuries to both the horse and rider. Bruising and sores may result on your horse’s back muscles if you do not choose a saddle that fits properly. It is important to have a trial period before actually buying your saddle. Think of it as a piece of sports equipment for a human, it varies greatly from each individual horse. Be sure to always keep your tack clean and well oiled to prevent breakage or unnecessary discomfort to your horse.

Tips for an English Saddle

-Without a pad, put the saddle on the horse and tighten the girth -Have a person sit in the saddle. Their feet should be in the stirrups -Slide your fingers underneath the pommel. Make sure that you can comfortably get three fingers in between the arch below the pommel and the horse’s withers. -The saddle should not get in the way of the horse’s shoulder movement by having someone lift the horse’s foreleg and pull it to the front. While doing this, your fingers should be between the top of the horse’s shoulder blade and the pommel. This must be done on both sides. -Standing behind the horse and looking under the saddle, some light should be seen when the horse’s head is down. -Make sure the saddle isn’t too long. It shouldn’t reach back onto the horse’s loins

Tips for a Western Saddle

-At least an inch thick of pad should be underneath the saddle -The stock saddle should be placed on the horse’s back and the cinch tightened so a set of fingers can be placed comfortably between the girth and the animal. -With someone on the saddle, make sure you can fit three fingers between the arch of the pommel and the horse’s withers -Make sure that the width of the saddle tree is fitting for the horse. Put three fingers with a flat hand sideways between the saddle and the top of the horse’s withers. If the fit is loose, the tree is too narrow, if it is too tight and you have to squeeze in your fingers, then the tree is too wide

Horse Racing Handicapping – 3 Approaches to Choose a Winner

Wagering inside a equine race is centered on picking the horse with the very best odds of winning and horse racing handicapping is the very best way to complete this. This is definitely an opinion endorsed by experts over time.

Plenty of theories with regards to horse racing handicapping have been developed recently and these concepts or angles as they’re called, are proving to become quite valuable to those who are significant about their betting.

1. Speed Figures Handicapping

The most popular angle in horse racing handicapping, this theory demands the handicapper to appear for the figures that denote the speed at which every horse has operate from the previous races. These figures are obtainable in the Daily Racing Forms, but the online, with its plethora of articles and analytical discussions supply the best details. The horse with the most effective timings usually wins a race. This angle has its drawbacks. The fact that the details is so effortlessly available renders it ineffective to some extent. The simple accessibility with the speed figures enables everyone and any individual to use them in picking the winner, thereby diminishing the man or women winnings. But in spite of that, this is an successful angle and most handicappers use it.

2. Trainer Handicapping

This can be an additional quite well-known and powerful angle in horse racing handicapping. It’s popularly accepted that the trainer has the capability to extract the very best performance from a racehorse. Researchers have realized that horses trained by certain trainers arrive up winners much more often than other horses. You can find several trainers that have the knack of even converting a horse thought to be being a poor bet into a winner by improving its performance. Finding out how a horse, in the starting of its career is taken for the winning post by a trainer, or how a trainer makes a winner out of the horse which has lately appear to him, are going to be advantageous to a handicapper. Details about the performances of trainers is also easily readily available and that limits the financial gains from this angle.

three. Pace Handicapping

Pace handicapping can be a program where the handicapper selects a winner based for the speeds of the horse in person stretches of a race. This theory advocates the thought that a horse that runs the early stretches quick and gains a lead at the beginning of the race, is a lot more likely to turn out to be the winner. If a horse had run past races at incredibly quickly speeds even though it had lost the race, it had far better than even odds of winning the existing race. That is what this angle suggests. This theory as well has its drawbacks. An account in the performances of the specific horse concerning its pace may perhaps not have regarded as other aspects like track and weather conditions. Every single horse has its own specific abilities and handicaps making it tough to compare horses based only on their speeds.

These and a couple of other horse racing handicapping angles, like Class Handicapping and Physicality Handicapping are perhaps the most effective techniques to choose a winner inside a horse race.

The Rare Canadian Horse Is The National Horse Of Canada

]]>

The Canadian Horse or Cheval Canadien was developed in Canada and has been relatively unknown in recent times due to its scarcity, but it has influenced many other North American breeds, including the Morgan, Tennessee Walking Horse, American Saddlebred, and Standardbred, and the Canadian Pacer, which had a profound impact on several gaited breeds of today. It is a recognized horse breed, indigenous only to Canada. It is so rare that several times the breed almost went extinct, but now the Canadian Horse has many supporters both inside and outside of Canada and is Canada’s National Horse.

The Canadian Horse originated from the Norman and Breton horses sent by King Louis XIV of France in the late 1600’s to the New World. These French horses are believed to have been of Arab, Andalusian and Barb ancestry since many traits of those breeds can still be recognized in the Canadian Horse today. Over several hundred years, the French horses were bred amongst themselves with little influence from outside breeds and eventually developed in the distinct breed known as the Canadian Horse or Cheval Canadien.

Since the breed was developed under the adverse conditions of harsh inclement weather, scarce food, and hard work, they became tough, strong, tolerant horses that are extremely easy keepers. The Canadian Horse is considered to be the sturdiest and most acclimatized horse in Canada and their strength was legendary. It has been rumored that the Canadian Horse was capable of generating more power per 100 pounds of body weight than any other breed and is often referred to as “The Little Iron Horse”.

In the mid-1800’s, there were about 150,000 Canadian Horses and the breed could be found throughout Canada and the United States. The Canadian Horse was used to improve the strength and hardiness of other breeds and as founding stock for several North American breeds. Canadian Horses were exported out of Canada for many purposes and the number of horses began to drop rapidly. When mechanized farm machinery came to the country, the Canadian Horse almost became extinct and during the 1860-1870’s there were fewer than 400 horses left with 20 or less being registered per year. By the late 1870’s the danger to the breed was finally recognized and efforts were made by diligent breeders to try to bring the Canadian Horse back from the dead.

Their efforts resulted in the first stud book in 1886 but progress was slow and it was not until 1895 that the Canadian Horse Breeders Association (CHBA) or, Sociйtй des Йleveurs de Chevaux Canadiens, was formed in the province of Quebec. The Canadian Livestock Records Corporation has been the administrators of the breed registry since 1904. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture set up a breeding program at Cap Rouge in 1913 where one of the foundation studs for the recovery effort, Albert De Cap Rouge, was foaled. Other breeding programs were set up in Quebec at St. Joachim and La Gorgendiere. After World War II, the Canadian Horse was on the verge of dying out again the 1950’s with the breed having disappeared from every Canadian province except Quebec, and this time the breed was resurrected by opening the stud books to previously unregistered, but known to be purebred Canadian horses.

Despite these efforts, the Canadian Horse once again nearly disappeared during the 1970’s when the numbers dropped to 400 horses again with fewer than 5 registrations per year and by 1979 all horse training programs were dropped since few foals were being produced. In 1981, the administration closed its Canadian Horse breeding program and auctioned off the remaining stock to private breeders.

The number of living registered Canadian Horses in existence in 2006 was estimated to be 5746, down from the 6374 that were surveyed in 2005, but if you combine the number of stallions and geldings registered the total comes to considerably less than the number of existing mares. Since males vs. females traditionally have a roughly equal registration ratio, it may mean that a significant number of male horses have never been registered or reported. This could be due to geldings not being registered because of the cost of registering a non-breeding horse, and because gelding-only owners often do not become breed association members so there would be no way to report their horses. It is hoped that the total number of existing Canadian Horses has been under-reported.

Some breeders feel that it is a disservice to the breed when horses are not registered because there is no way of accurately tracking the population, nor of being able to track specific individuals to see if which ones are producing exceptional animals that may be particularly suited to one discipline or another. In spite of this, the breed is continuing to gain in numbers and popularity, but the Canadian Horse is still classified as “rare” on the American Livestock Conservancy list which has only recently been upgraded from “critical”.

The Canadian Horse stands 14 to 16 hands high, weighs between 1000 and 1400 pounds and black is often seen although chestnut, bay, and dark brown are also available. The overall impression is of power and agility from a well-balanced and proportioned conformation and graceful carriage. The finely chiseled head of the Canadian Horse is rather short and thin with straight lines, carried high and slanting on a medium length arched neck that is fairly arched. Eyes are large, moderately convex, bright, kind, and active. Ears are set well apart and are rather short. Both mane and tail have an abundance of fine wavy hair with tail being large at the root and attached rather high and carried well. Their short cannon bones often exceed 9″ in circumference and the gait of the Canadian Horse has a free and vigorous movement with, hocks, knees, fetlocks, and pasterns bending well in higher harmonious movements. The hooves are exceptionally tough and rarely require little more than routine trimming.

The breed has an energetic and spirited temperament without nervousness and is very calm and docile. It has been renowned for their sensible, sociable natures, high intelligence and willingness to please, but they have also been described as having a tendency to be “in your face” and quite “opinionated” to the point of encroaching on your own physical space which can be an issue for someone who feels intimidated by horses. The Canadian Horse is considered to be a general utility horse and from the very beginning, it was valuable not only for plowing, but also as a carriage horse. The breed is long-lived and still useful even at an advanced age. The mares are extraordinarily fertile and able to reproduce regularly until the age of 20 or older.

Build a Chicken House Easily

Ok, so you want to keep chickens at home and the next question is how to go about housing them properly? Do you buy them a readymade home or do you build a chicken house for them? Obviously, there are pros and cons with any choices that you make but, if you want to give your girls the safest and best possible egg laying environment then the DIY option is by far the better of the two I think.

Horse Jump Hurdles What Are They Made Of

Edit Article |

]]>

Horse jumps are designed and set up to test the abilities of both horse and rider. When your magnificent steed approaches his jumps, you want to know that he is going to safely clear it, and that you are going to ride him safely over the jump. Safety is assured (as much as possible) when you buy the jumping equipment from a reliable company. Safety is primary.

Safety comes first, price comes second. Price is, of course, an important consideration. When you can buy from a company that guarantees its prices are lower than any other seller s, it is your first choice of where to buy your jumping equipment.

Regardless of manufacturer, the crucial details and design are crucial. Whether made of wood or PVC, the design might be the same. Wood is susceptible to rotting but PVC, a man made material is not. It can be left out in the rain. Most purchasers are choosing PVC because it is impervious to rain and can be left outside regardless of the weather.

The PVC material itself is more expensive to begin with, but the manufacturing methods are superior to those used with wood. This keeps the price of the finished product lower. Therefore it is preferable.

There are many things about this industry that the average person does not know. There are a variety of types of jumps. Cavalletti jumps are used in dressage exhibitions. The horses trained for dressage, also known as dancing, are different than those used for Western trail competitions for example. Those jumps are similar to natural things found on trail rides, such as logs.

There are specifications for each type of jump. As a beginner who wants to start with a few simple hurdles, you need to know some facts. You can set up your first jumps. Check each piece of equipment for nails or sharp pieces. A cross rail is a kind of upright fence made with two poles meeting at the center in a cross. This keeps the horse jumping in the center of the jump.

A pyramid jump and oxer jump are two other types. Any combination of two or three jumps in a row requires careful measurement of not only the height but the distance between the jumps as measured in strides. An upright fence must be correctly spaces as it is a difficult jump.

Jumps require twelve feet between them for a horse and ten feet for a pony. You can also, as an alternative, measure your own horse\’s stride for perfect distancing. A simple tape measure will suffice to measure the distances.

It is crucial that you do not place a pole behind a jump. It creates a false ground line. That will make the horse perceive the jump to be further back than it actually is. Of course this will throw off his judgement creating a dangerous situation.

Open water jumps must conform to specific size regulations for different courses. The jumps can be purchased individually or in packages to be set up on site in various ways. There are also additional accessories that include extra rails, cups, wings and flower boxes to create an attractive jumping course with. Although appearance is not the primary consideration, it definitely enhances the look at any horse show.

Horse jumps allow the spectators to enjoy the grace of horse and rider as they clear them. They may not understand the difficulty of the jumps and how much training of both horse and rider are needed to accomplish clearing them gracefully; the spectators do derive pleasure from all the beauty and that includes how the course is presented.

How To Create A Profitable Horse Blog

Three easy tips on how to earn money writing a Horse Blog

You may have heard or read that one can earn money by writing a blog. You have decided to write a horse blog because you love horses and horse riding, but you are not quite sure how to go about it, nor do you know exactly what a horse blog is.

What is a horse blog?

A horse blog, or any blog for that matter is a type of journal, a bit like and old-fashioned diary or scrapbook. You use it as an internet-based record of your life, your thoughts, your experiences and your knowledge. Some people use it as a marketing tool, to sell their products or services. Blog is short for weblog; it’s a bit like a training log where you note your and your horses training goals and achievements.

Free and easy

It is extremely easy to start a horse blog and is absolutely FREE. All you need to do is to go to a site like Blogger for internet-novices, or Wordpress for internet-intermediates. You can set your blog up in 5 minutes flat by following the simple clear instructions on the website.

And then what? How do you earn money from your website once you have set it up?

Use good, old-fashioned word of mouth to get people to read your blog. Choose a subject for your blog that you are familiar with and feel passionate about. Write about it regularly, at least once or twice a week. Then tell every one you know about it. E-mail all your friends about your new horse blog. Tell your riding buddies, your vet, your farrier, your grand-mother. Spread the word. And then monetize this traffic with the following methods:

1. By adding Google Adsense to your blog. This is not too awfully complicated either. Type the word adsense into your browser window, open an account, wait until it has been validated and then add the code to your websites. There are some excellent e-books available on the net about how to get the most from adsense.

2. By writing reviews about books you have read or equipment you have tried and encouraging your readers to get a copy or piece of equipment of their own. This is called affiliate marketing. It basically means that you agree with the merchant of the e-book you read or product you found useful that you would earn a commission on each sale they make from a client you referred to them. It may sound complicated, but due to the modern technology available on the internet it is in fact tremendously simple. Tons of e-books have been written on affiliate marketing, some more useful than others.

3. Promote your own equestrian e-book or short report on your blog. Add a mouth-watering description of your product, listing all the benefits that buying your e-book will bring riders who buy it. You can even sell your e-book from your blog.

Social Benefits

Not only can you earn money with your horse blog, but it is also extremely rewarding. As time goes by, you will meet lots of fascinating horse people, and learn an enormous amount, all from the comfort of your living room. (or where-ever you keep your computer)

Writing a horse blog is not difficult; it can be a lot of fun and help you earn some pocket money to spend on your horse.

Trick-Training Animals Lessons with Lukas, the World’s Smartest Horse – Pressure

Pressure is any request I make of my student. I use the lightest detectable cue possible – in this way the animal becomes more sensitive and anticipatory. Let’s all take a little test. This one always gets everyone’s attention! I’d like you to take your finger and using a regular cueing pressure, the amount you’d typically use, say, to get your dog or horse to move over – touch your own arm. Now hold that for a moment, feel it?

As with every other lesson, patience and care is instilled while encouraging positive and productive associations.

For those of you familiar with Lukas, you already know that I consider liberty work to be the most important element in my training program; I credit Lukas’ learning to learn, and our bond to it. Far from Over the Hill

I met Lukas, my horse, when he was nine years old – considered past his prime for much change; he was set in his ways and had many issues by that time. He was by all accounts a depleted failure, but his lively spirit belied his past traumas.

Horse Water Jumps What Are They Of

Horse jumps are the equipment used to set up jumping courses either in a show ring or on a trail. The abilities of horse and rider are both challenged. A beauteous animal jumps over a fence and you want to make sure he can clear it and land safely on the other side. Buy your jumping equipment from reputable manufacturer for safety sake.

In addition to safety, the cost of the jumps and accessories are important. Some companies guarantee a low price and will meet or beat their competition s prices. As long as the buyer gets the same quality, of course he is delighted to pay less.

Although PVC is more expensive than wood, new computerized methods of producing horse jumps keeps the price of PVC jumps in line with the cost of wood jumps. It can now be sold for less than wood jumps.

Measure the distance between jumps at approximately twelve feet for a horse or ten feet for a pony. Alternatively, you can measure your own horse s exact stride. Use a tape measure and set up the distance between jumps according to your horse.

Never place a pole behind any jump. This will confuse your horse greatly. By creating a false ground line, it makes the horse see the jump as being further back than it is. The judgement of the horse is crucial to avoid jumping being a dangerous activity.

The jumps over open water are required to meet certain size requirements in a show. Jumps can be individually purchased or bought as a package deal with everything needed for one complete jump or one complete competition course. Accessories are available as single purchases and include extras such as flower boxes to make the course more attractive to the audience. Appearance is not nearly as important as safety, but it does add to the enjoyment of the spectators.

Horse jumps provide the course for the jumping competition. Spectators love to watch the graceful jumps made by horses. They do not realize how difficult these jumps are. They might not know how much training is involved to accomplish this feat. But, the pleasure of watching their graceful maneuvers over the course is a wonderful thing.

Horse Jumps and Hurdles Hurdles What Are They Made Of

In addition to safety, the cost of the jumps and accessories are important. Some companies guarantee a low price and will meet or beat their competition s prices. As long as the buyer gets the same quality, of course he is delighted to pay less.

It is of the utmost importance to buy quality equipment. Wood or PVC, a man made type of plastic material, is used to build the jumps. Horse show planners consider PVC superior in many ways. It cannot rot like wood. It is long lasting and can be left out in inclement weather. It is very durable.

Although PVC is more expensive than wood, new computerized methods of producing horse jumps keeps the price of PVC jumps in line with the cost of wood jumps. It can now be sold for less than wood jumps.

There are oxer jumps and pyramid jumps and an endless number of combination jumps. All require careful measurements be taken. The height is important and the distance between jumps is crucial. Generally speaking, allow twelve feet between jumps for a horse, and ten feet for a pony.

Jumps require twelve feet between them for a horse and ten feet for a pony. You can also, as an alternative, measure your own horse\’s stride for perfect distancing. A simple tape measure will suffice to measure the distances.

Horse jumps bring joy to the people watching these magnificent equine competitions. They may or may not appreciate the work and training behind the acquired skills, but they certainly derive pleasure from watching how gracefully they do it. The beauty of the horses is enhanced by an attractive show ring as well.

Horse Heaven

Jane Smiley

In ‘Horse Heaven’ the universe of horse racing is woven into a marvellous tapestry of joy and love, chicanery, folly, greed and reckless courage. Spanning two years on the circuit, from Kentucky and California to New York and Paris, Jane Smiley’s wonderful novel puts us among trainers and track brats, horse-obsessed girls, nervy jockeys, billionaire breeders and restless track wives.
“The world of horse-racing has never been portrayed to such spellbinding effect.”
That quote from the ‘Tatler’ review illustrates the depth and breadth of this fascinating novel and explains why it is regarded as one of the great horse books of all time.
A rich tapestry of human and animal characters, ‘Booklist’ described it as “a symphonic celebration of the byzantine world of thoroughbred horse racing, an electrifying and at times melodramatic tale of two years on the thoroughbred racing circuit with a wealth of intimate knowledge about horse breeding, training and racing, not to mention sensuous description and supple human and equine psychology.”
In following the racing careers of five thoroughbreds, the novel encompasses all the thrills, heartaches and excitement of horse racing at the highest level. The horses are the stars but are supported by a myriad of fascinating human characters: owners, trainers, stud farm managers, jockeys, vets, grooms and gamblers. There are as many intriguing stories in this work as there are in a rich human life and are woven together brilliantly in a breathtakingly sustained piece of writing. Readers are kept exhilarated right up to the finishing line.
‘The Financial Times’ concluding its review says: “You will never regret having read this book and you will, even if you care nothing for horses, begin to understand why those who live by and for them, do so.”
A fitting tribute to a literary masterpiece.

How to Make Your Horse Coat Shine

‘Pig Oil’ is a well kept secret, revealed here by dressage rider, Hannah Biggs. Hannah shows how to apply it to make your horse’s coat gleam and catch the judge’s eye! She explains its many uses which, she says, include a treatment for sweet itch, minor cuts and rug rubs, as well as restoring hair. (01:35)

The ancient Greeks, the old Egyptians, the Hindus, the Zulus and even the Native Americans, and is it likely, if there are no fairies, that so many different people would claim to have seen and heard them? Whatever you believe, in this volume Andrew Lang has collated 48 Russian, German, French, Icelandic, American Indian, and other fairy stories from around the world.

Phar Lap: Australia’s Wonder Horse

]]>

Phar Lap’s list of race victories reads like a roll-call of Australia’s greatest races: Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate (twice), Victoria Derby, AJC Derby, Futurity Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Memsie Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, Craven Plate, VRC St Leger, Chelmsford Stakes. Add to that the world’s richest race (Agua Caliente Handicap) and a sad demise and you soon realise why Phar Lap inspired a movie in his honour and was a household name in Australian and abroad.

Phar Lap was born October 4th, 1926 in New Zealand before being sold as a yearling to David J. Davis, an American-born sportsman living in Australia, for 160 guineas. Davis’ first view of the giant 17.1 hand chestnut, whose name is Thai for “lightning”, was not a positive one. He had bought the colt based on his pedigree alone, and he had thought he was really getting a good bargain, until he saw the horse. Phar Lap arrived in Australia thin and rather clumsy, with an awkward gait. He also sported warts all over his big head.

Davis was quite angry about how Phar Lap looked and moved, and even angrier at the trainer Harry Telford, who had talked him into buying the horse. He decided that he would not waste any more of his money by having the horse trained, and leased him to that same trainer. It would be Telford’s responsibility to pay for the training and feeding of Phar Lap, and then he would be able to keep two-thirds of the money that the horse won. Telford had long studied the pedigrees of racehorses, and felt that Phar Lap’s breeding was good enough that he had champion potential. He was gelded so that the young horse would better concentrate on his racing.

“Bobby”, Phar-Lap’s stable nickname, was attended by a stable boy called Tommy Woodcock. The horse was known to be a good natured prankster, and enjoyed playing little tricks on Woodcock. Phar Lap was so devoted to the stable boy that he would not eat unless Woodcock came to be in the stall with him.

Phar Lap got off to rather a slow start in racing, not placing at all in his first four races. Finally, on April 27th 1929, he won the Maiden Juvenile Handicap at Rosehill when ridden by 17 year-old apprentice Jack Baker. Once Phar Lap ran a strong second in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on September 14 1929, he really began to get attention from the racing community as a whole. For the rest of his all too short life, Phar Lap would only fail to place one time, in the Melbourne Cup of 1931. His powerful leg muscles and strong heart were a credit to him as he won race after race, including 14 from 16 as a four year-old.

Phar Lap’s winning ways did not please everyone. On Derby Day, November 1 1930, someone tried to keep him from running the Melbourne Stakes by taking a shot at him. He was unhurt, thanks to the quick thinking of Tommy Woodcock, and went on to win the race later that day. He also won the Melbourne Cup three days later despite a troublesome and delayed float trip. By the end of that week the horse nicknamed Big Red had survived a shotgun attack and won four races.

The next challenge for Phar Lap was to show the rest of the racing world that he could beat all-comers. He went by ship to Mexico in what was luxurious accommodation by equine standards. Even though he had travelled such a long way, and also had an injured hoof, he won the $100,000 Agua Caliente Handicap and proved to the racing world that he really was the wonder from Down Under.

Following that win Phar Lap next travelled to the United States. He was enjoying a spell at a private ranch in Menlo Park, California while his owner was busily negotiating more races for him. Early in the day on April 5, 1932, Tommy Woodcock checked on Phar Lap and saw that he looked and acted ill. He took the horse’s temperature, found it was elevated, and then discovered that the horse was in considerable pain. By midday Phar Lap began to haemorrhage and soon after died. Woodcock was inconsolable, throwing himself onto the horse’s body and sobbing.

Australians, Americans, and people around the world were shocked and stunned at the sudden death of Phar Lap. An autopsy discovered that the horse’s intestines and stomach were much inflamed, which led to the belief he had been poisoned. Rumours started to fly that Phar Lap had been poisoned deliberately. The ranch where he was staying had recently been sprayed with an insecticide that contained arsenic. It was also rumoured that Tommy Woodcock had accidentally given the horse too much of a tonic that contained arsenic. Called Fowler’s Solution, it was given to horses in order to help them have an appetite. Scientists later confirmed that, whether intentional or not, Phar Lap almost certainly died from an overdose of arsenic.

Phar Lap still stands on display at the Melbourne Museum as a tribute to his greatness. The National Museum in Canberra has his big heart which weighs an amazing 6.2kg, almost double the size of a normal racehorse.

Choosing From Various Horse Breeds

]]>

If horses are your passion, it is relatively easy for you to identify various breeds of horses. What is more, you will not find it hard to train or take care of them. There are more than one hundred varieties of this animal. All of them have different traits which require specific care and attention in order for you to get close to them. If you do not know anything about horses, training or rearing them will be really difficult. This is the reason why you need to study or know more about them before you think of buying one. If ever you decide right away and you are not prepared, you will end up with a hind-leg kick from your horse.

Comprehending horses means that you have to delve into the relationship that you have with your horse. Compared to other farm animals, the former has always been very special to the humans. Even in the past, the horses are relied upon for different things. They are depended upon for transportation, for milk, for entertainment, for companionship, and sadly for some, food. If several years ago horses are used mostly to carry or lug heavy loads, this animal is now kept for leisure purposes or sports. The most common places that you will get to see horses are farms, ranches, and racing stables. When it comes to a specific breed, you have to buy a horse which you know fits your requirements accordingly. If you want to acquire the right variety for your children, you should choose a horse which is gentle and sweet. On the other hand, the best breed for horse racing is one which is fast and swift.

Horses for sale are common nowadays, what with the huge number of individuals wanting to buy their own. While you can look into your options when you visit farms, there is a more convenient way of checking out selections. This is possible when you check out online sites that offer free classified listings. One of these sites is HorseClicks, which provides photo classifieds of various horse breeds. You can take a pick from Arabian horses, Thoroughbred, Appaloosa, Quarter, Buckskin, Paint, and other breeds. The classified listings of Horses Click provide information such as the name of the horse, age, date of birth, gender, breed, color, height, and price. There is also a comment on the traits of the horse and what it has accomplished.

Through the free photo classifieds of HorseClicks, you will be able to find the perfect horse breed. There are three general classifications of horse varieties. These are heavy, light, and pony. Heavy breeds have well-developed muscles, legs, and shoulders. They are suitable for farm chores, especially with the pulling of heavy carts. Examples of this breed are Percheron, Shire, and Clydesdale. On the other hand, light breed horses are useful for racing, riding, carriage-drawing, and rounding up of cattle. These horses are sleek, swift, and tall. Common examples of this breed include the Arabian, Appaloosa, Quarter, and Thoroughbred. The last breed would be ponies, which are suitable as pets or companions for children. Their size is small and their nature gentle. Common examples are Welsh and Shetland.
