Does Your Horse Behave Badly For The Farrier?

Edit Article |

]]>

The better your horse behaves for your farrier, the better job your farrier can do. Let’s face it.  No one wants to have to pick out a hoof or look at an injured hoof when a horse is behaving badly. Neither does your farrier.  It’s hard enough to keep your own feet out of the way and not get stepped on on a good day. Imagine what your farrier has to cope with as he wrestles around with tools and nails, deals with a nervous owner, or dodges the barn dog running underfoot to grab a snack of hoof, and on top of that, your horse is bouncing around from side to side. Your horse’s safety and your farrier’s safety depend of your horse’s behavior.  We all know that sometimes horses do misbehave, become afraid, or jump around. But if your  horse chronically misbehaves while being shod, you need to work with him to resolve this issue.  Daily handling of your horse and his feet is the best solution to helping your horse behave for the farrier. Is your horse misbehaving due to pain, fear, prior mismanagement, or lack of education?  The solution depends on what’s bothering your horse. Here are some tips to help you determine why your horse is misbehaving. If that’s the case, talking to the vet may be in order. Usually a horse that is patiently handled will gain trust in both the handler and the farrier in a short time. As long as you can determine the cause of his fear and avoid it, your horse should return to his confident self in no time. For example, maybe he’s afraid because he sees or smells the smoke from a hot shoe, the sound of the grinder, having been stuck with a high nail from the last shoeing, or been scared by a running dog while on the cross ties. If your horse had been mismanaged during prior shoeing or trimming, he should be dealt with as a horse with fear issues. You must be patient and repeatedly build his confidence. Both you and your farrier should have a system so your horse gains confidence with each lift of the hoof. If you acquire a young horse or a horse that hasn’t had proper handling, be sure to work with the horse before the farrier comes for the first time! 5.  Sometimes your horse may behave better when you’re not there. Ask your farrier what he prefers. I know from experience that when I’m present, my own mare pays more attention to me than to the farrier. That makes his job significantly harder.  Instead of focusing on the farrier, she pays attention to me (usually begging for a treat). As a result, she doesn’t focus on her job of picking up her feet and standing still for him.  I respectfully let him shoe my mare when I’m not there, knowing that she’ll behave better for him that way.

Many people ask me about the choreography of their dressage freestyle pattern. One of the confusions surrounding a freestyle pattern is what is allowed and what is forbidden at a certain level. The History Of Horses And Texas

]]>

When you say the word horses a few places come to mind, Montana, Wyoming, but none as much as Texas. Texas and its horses have quite a history. In this article we will introduce you to a little Texas history and the horses that are involved.
First, we have to go into a little Mexican and Spanish History. Texas was, for a long time, under Spanish rule. Spain ruled Mexico and Mexico ruled Texas you might say.
Spain’s introduction of warfare on horseback is very well known. The horse helped the Conquistadors conquer more and more territory throughout South America. Their territory once extended from Peru and Argentina all the way up into Texas and Louisiana.
Most of the groups the warriors from Spain encountered had no horses and were at a huge disadvantage in battle. The image we always see of the Spanish Soldier is one of him in armor and on horseback.
Another image that is conjured up when mentioning horses and Texas is Indians on horseback. What many do not know is that the Indians in Texas had no horses until they were brought in during Spanish rule of the area. Most hoses the Indians rode were ones stolen from settlers and soldiers after seeing the advantage the soldiers had over them.
When Mexicans first began to settle in Texas around where the Friars built their missions to bring religion to the Indians, most of them didn’t bring horses either. People walked hundreds of miles to get to where they would eventually settle and build their homes. Many had mules or donkeys, but few had horses.
It was the same for those who came from various places within the new United States. They came by boat to New Orleans many times, but then had a long walk to get to their new Texas home where the Mexican government was giving land away for free.
The settlers soon discovered there were wild horses in Texas. What we now call Mustangs were abundant and were free if you could catch them and train them. These horses were not as big as other horses, but they were very sturdy and strong animals that became a huge part of Texas history.
You have to see it how it was then. There was not that much actual cash money to be had anywhere in Texas. There was free land if you were willing to go there and claim it. There were free horses if you were willing to catch and train them. There were even free cattle if you were willing to round them up, the Texas Longhorn.
So many settlers made the long trek to Texas, converted to Catholicism, which was required by the Mexican government if you wanted free land, then captured and trained free Mustangs, which they then used to round up the free cattle.
It sounds great, huh? Just go grab some free land, free horses, and free cattle and you were on your way! Not exactly. It was a very rough life. One that not many people today could even fathom. There was not many people in Texas, some Indian tribes did not want settlers there and showed it through violent attacks, and the work was hard.
To make money from the cattle or horses that were collected they had to be driven all the way to New Orleans for sale. This drive took months to accomplish. The travel we do today spoils our ability to understand the way it was for these settlers.
Some of them spent more than a year traveling to find where they and their families would settle. They then spent at least another year building their house and gathering the horses and cattle that might make up their rancho. Then figure at least a 6 month round trip to sell cattle or horses just to make enough money to buy supplies that were not available free on the Texas range.
The Mustang Horse proved to be one of the best horses for soldiers. It was sturdy enough to handle the rough terrain that larger horses could not handle. They could go without water longer than other horses. They were not skittish when it came to gunfire and battle.
The Texas Rangers rode Mustangs while roaming Texas in search of Banditos and Outlaws. Many men riding Mustangs fought the Battle of San Jacinto. The Apache Indians used them somewhat, but the fierce Comanche Indians had many Mustangs and were some of the greatest horsemen to ever live anywhere. But that is another story.
I hope this short article gave you at least a glimpse into where horses in Texas came from and how they were used. Look in your favorite search engine for more about the Mustangs that still run free today and for more about Texas history and horses. You’ll find the topic interesting and entertaining.

Dressage Training Tips – Riding Circles

Edit Article |

Posted: Aug 10, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

How often do you train circles when preparing for a dressage competition?

There is more to riding circles than just getting higher scores in dressage competitions.  Riding circles have great advantages in having your horse supple and balanced when you are riding. You can have more fun and do more things with your horse. Riding good circles are a great way to train your horse to be supple and balanced. It is easy to plan your training to include circles of different kinds in your training program. It helps a lot if you have some markers around the circle. Then you can clearly see where you are going.

How do you ride a good circle?
Remember that you are your horse’s riding partner. So think about the part that you play in riding good circles. What about your position? Are you supple and balanced as a rider? Check that. Sit straight and tall, have your shoulders square with your horse’s shoulders and that your hips are aligned with your riders hips. Make sure you look ahead – look where you are going!

Use your inside hand to show your horse the way. Ask him/her for a slight bend to the inside of the circle with your rein aid. Your outside hand softens slightly to allow your horse to bend his/her neck in that direction. Think of how the neck can flow around the curve of the circle line.

Use your inside leg placed at the girth to remind your horse to keep going forward. Sometimes lazy horses use a change in direction like a circle as a good excuse to slow down and have a rest! Keep your leg on to keep the impulsion so that your horse keeps going forward. Remember forward first! Your outside leg stays slightly behind the girth so that the flow that you started with the head and neck continues through your horse’s body. A well ridden dressage circle means that your horse’s quarters don’t swing away from that line of flow. The result of riding good circles – a balanced and supple horse!

Non Traditional Training Systems

I am sure that there are a lot of horse lovers around the world, and that all of them would like to spend more time with these gorgeous creatures. There are a lot of horse stables where you can practice and learn how to behave around horses, and if you can afford one, you can keep one in your home. All horses are extremely sensitive, so you need to be extra careful while training them. One of the highly recommended training systems is the TTeam, developed by Linda Tellington-Jones, which is considered to be horse friendly, and most importantly available to everyone. It is especially suited to educating any horse who might have learning difficulties due to poor handling, injury or stress issues, or simple inherited conformational biomechanical issues. In Tellington’s words: “TTeam addresses the pain, soreness, fear and tension in a horse’s body which is very often responsible for their resistance and/or their undesirable behavior.” In her book “Improve Your Horse’s Well Being” she says that: “TTeam allows you to change your horse’s behavior and influence his personality without force, by using non-habitual, non-threatening movement and special ground exercises.” This method is very hard to teach, and of course requires a lot of patience, but trust me, the results at the end are worth every single second of it. Performance horses in every discipline, from endurance horses to Olympic dressage and jumping horses, have shown improved performance with the use of the TTeam training system. And the best way to learn this training system is of course from the master itself, Linda Tellington-Jones or even the practitioners trained and certified by her. This system is considered to be the most honest fulfillment of being able to enjoy with horses in a way that produces and results with comfort and confidence between the horse and its rider, and most importantly a system that can generate a genuine spiritual bond between them. But of course, if you do not have the time to visit any stables, or the means to take care for a horse, you can always go online and play all kinds of horse games, take care of your virtual horse in a completely equipped virtual stable and simply make the most with what you have at the moment.

The Seven Cardinal Sins When Working With Your Horse

Edit Article |

Posted: Apr 19, 2010 |Comments: 0
|

]]>

The goal of working with your horse is t develop a relationship based upon trust and respect. Occasionally we tend to abuse this relationship and test the strength of the developed trust through various sins against our horses. Below I have listed the most frequently observed sins that will test our relationship with our horse.
Number one is constantly pulling on the reins as we ask the horse to perform something. This must be replaced with a take and give to loose rein to encourage the horse to lower their head and take up the bit.
Number two is attempting to teach your horse a new skill at a pace faster than a trot. New skills need to be learnt at a walk and progress to a trot. Your horse will not learn a new skill or movement at any pace faster and attempting to do so will only lead to frustration for both you and your horse.
Number three is to continually work your horse without adequate breaks during the training session. We would not accept this in any training regime of ours so how can we expect it of our horses. Breaks will serve to allow the horse to relax, feel good and process information and so assist his learning.
Number four is too often we get into a fight with our horses. This is a battle we can not win, if only based on sheer size. If your horses is getting mad, ease off and rethink what you are asking, does he have the skill and fitness to perform, does he know how?
Number five is at times we keep pushing our horses when we run into problems. The horse at these times is trying to tell us he does understand or is frustrated and had enough. It is best to go back to the basics and soften up on your aids and riding to give him a break, whilst doing something he can easily perform.
Number six is leaving and stopping working with a horse when he is mad. The horse will only commence from this point next time you start to work with him. All training and work should be ended on a good note so that he is feeling good and then it is easier to commence your next session on a positive note.
Number seven is that we often overlook the need to spend sufficient time teaching our horse to give. This ability to give to pressure and resistance is the core of any training and skill performance, and so it will pay enormous dividends to spend lots of time teaching your horse to give.
Training and working with your horse will be far more enjoyable and productive if you can avoid these cardinal sins.

Everyone is a trainer. Every minute of every day you’re either training yourself or training others, even if it’s just to maintain a habit. Let’s take a closer look at that, because it’s important. Your alarm goes off in the morning, and what do you do? If you’re anything like me, you hit the snooze – maybe more than once. Then, too rushed for a real breakfast, you settle for a doughnut instead. Back home after a long day, and if you’re a little distracted, you might forget and let the dog …

Cause and Effect in Horse Training

We all know that if you cause a horse to do something then you will get a certain effect. What a lot of people don’t understand is how much effect they actually have on a horse. The reality is that every second that you are with your horse you are training him even if you’re unaware of it. It is not uncommon for people to try to do something with their horse and actually teach it something completely different, or something they do not want him to do.

Horse have an attention span similar to that of men when they are distracted by something, that is they get distracted very easily. According to an expert of the English language, the most frequently used English noun is the word ‘way’. However, in horse training the most frequently used word is ‘whoa’. Horse Instruction – Four Lessons to Teach Your Horse

]]>

What are the four most essential lessons in horse teaching? According to specialists, you have to teach your horse about motivation, area, direction, and reward. Horse trainers who discover it difficult to handle horses will have to teach these four lessons to their horse. It does not actually matter if you’re instruction a performance horse or a colt simply because these lessons are important to the instruction program. Do not let your horse handle you; you need to act as the leader from the herd.Horse instruction is also about proper handle. Training horses can be compared to building a brick house. It takes some time before you can finish building it. So you must give your horse time in learning the numerous lessons with the instruction plan. The various system parts of your horse should be easily controlled; it is possible to begin by controlling 1 component at a time. While doing this, you need to be an active rider, not a reactive a single. MotivationThis could be the very first lesson to introduce for your horse. Horses are wild animals by nature. They eat, play, groom, and sleep. Nonetheless, they are also known as herd animals and a mare controls the whole herd. So that you can effectively train your horse, you may need to act as the leader with the herd. Since you are going to train your horse, it’s like asking your horse to function for you. You have to think of something which will motivate your horse to follow the teaching system you’ve set up for him. Horses do not desire to be led and that’s one fact that you simply ought to accept. But it doesn’t end there. You ought to not give up yet. SpotThis really is where ’spot’ comes in. You have to discover a specific area that you can manage to ensure that your horse will stick to. This may possibly take time but just keep on trying to identify the proper place about the horse’s body. DirectionAfter you’ve discovered a place, you must decide about the direction. Each part from the horse’s entire body can go in various directions – left, correct, forward, backward, down, and up. Pick only a single direction. Make sure that your horse understands your aids or signal to ensure that he will not be baffled. RewardThis could be the last lesson. When your horse follows your signals, do not forget to give him a reward. You are able to give him a treat or you are able to simply pat him lightly and say ‘that’s a great boy/girl’.The four lessons seem very effortless but it is different when you’re already about the training ground. Stubborn horses are hard to manage and you’ll need lots of time and patience. In case you lack experience, really don’t hesitate to consult the professionals. Do not be discouraged mainly because not all horses are stubborn; you will find also those who are effortless to function with. The secret would be to teach the four lessons one at a time. When your horse is familiar with the lessons, you’ll encounter fewer problems. Identifying a motivating factor is not as simple as you believe. Begin out early. You ought to also be a great rider to ensure that you won’t be baffled in interpreting the horse’s moves. Discover all that it is possible to about proper horse instruction. You should study the horse’s behavior and personality. Try to discover how to incorporate these four lessons for your instruction program and finest of luck to you. There’s also helpful info on Equestrian Riding Equipment

Learn to Ride a Horse – Basic Horseback Riding Lessons

]]>

There are a few things that some people wish to do before they die.  For some they want to climb Mount Everest, some want to see the ancient pyramids, and some just want to learn to ride a horse.  Fortunately for me I was able to learn to ride a horse at a very young age and it’s something I have enjoyed my whole entire life.  If you wish to learn to ride a horse I’ll give you just a couple of things that you should learn to do right at the start.
One of the first things that you should do when you learn to ride a horse is to learn how to lead one.  That’s probably not what you had in mind but still, it’s kind of important.  You shouldn’t be standing at the end of the lead rope trying to pull your horse along and you also shouldn’t be standing at their shoulder letting them lead you along.  There’s no control in either of those methods.  The best way to lead a horse is to stand with your shoulder pretty close to their throatlatch and about a foot over to the side of them.  That way you have enough room between the two of you for comfort.  With one hand right below the lead snap and the other holding the rest of the lead line, you will step forward with the horse hopefully following.  If it doesn’t then you just simply push gently in the direction you want to go with the hand that has the snap.  That will give you the most control over the horse.
Now that you know how to lead a horse your horseback riding lessons will flow smoother.  When you learn to ride a horse you have to be in control and if you can lead one with control on the ground you have a better chance of being able to learn to ride a horse.  Riding a horse works best when you know that you’re in control.  If you think that you can’t ride a horse, you will never be able to learn proper horseback riding.  They will know that you’re scared and take total advantage of you.  That’s all there is to it.  If you get scared just take some deep breaths and tell yourself that you’re the boss.  Any time my mare and I have a “discussion” and she thinks that she’s the boss I calmly let her know that I’m the boss and that I’m always going to win.  And I always do.  You can’t get rough and be mean but you have to be firm.  If you start beating and thumping on a horse, odds are it’s gonna scared and then you might get scared.  Not a good thing.
You can learn to ride a horse by taking lessons but unless you are with a trainer that has a goal of teaching you something in particular, you might be able to get the same effects by watching a few videos or reading some horse training books.  And a lot of those books you can purchase online for a reasonable cost.  No sense making horse ownership any more expensive than it needs to be.  If you learn to ride a horse, you are learning a skill that has been around for hundreds of years and obviously is still important to this day because people still do it.  Mainly some will learn to ride a horse for pleasure, relaxation or just time by themselves.  What’s you’re reason?

All racing fans will concur that nothing can beat the excitement of racing horses on an actual race track. However, online racing games are a good alternative to keep in mind if you are concerned with getting a share of the adventure associated with horse racing from your home; anywhere in the world. Most horse games online are equipped with 3 D features that make the game that much more exciting. Good online horse race games have graphics that work at producing images that make the racing feel as close to the real thing as possible. Some of these virtual games may require you to have an updated computer so that it can do justice to the imagery and the effects that are on offer. Horse games online usually have fictitious jockeys and trainers that you can employ. Some games even involve management and strategizing on the part of the patron. Other games allow the players to focus entirely on the raw appeal of racing horses on a track. Players are aptly awarded on winning races that they participate in. Horse games online also offer you the chance of winning real prize money. Prize amounts may vary according to the game that you chose to play. Most horse games online is a great method to sharpen your horse racing skills and a good substitute to actually going on the turf and racing. While all the horse racing activities incorporated into online games are internet based, the prize money that can be won on the basis of your horse’s performance can sometimes be real, depending on the game you chose to play. Nevertheless, it is important to bear in mind that in to win a lot of money in such games; you would end up spending a lot of your own money too.

How to Make Profit Out of Losing Horses?

Edit Article |

Posted: May 19, 2008 |Comments: 0
|

With the advent of betting exchanges getting recognition for a more modular system for horse betting, more and more people are trying to make dividends by betting on horses which are tempted to lose. What ever the proposition of winning money on losing horse, it is always best to bet against the horse that’s favorite to win the race.

This can be understood this way too, generally, a horse with lots of money on stake over is considered favorite, in some instances, there could be a horse with lower prices but better chances of winning the game. And from on the edge of that particular rate a punter starts making profit after betting on that horse.

So a punter makes profit by betting on favorite that are often priced very low. Sometimes betting on the exchanges proves very crucial as they are very efficient barometer to judge probability. But a wrong probability and slightest error on decision let you to watch your money draining away like water down a plug hole. Therefore distinction between favorite and true favorites is a must for a strong winning probability.

By following a certain criteria one can easily judge the positive aspect of a horse’s form with strong probability to win the race. The horse should have strong probability and strong contender ship to win the race with ability to run on the track where race is about to be organized. Analysis of general form of the horse races over a period of last few weeks conducted on the track.

Track record of trainer on a specific track on a horse including second position or one winning during the period of previous 14 days is a very good sign for betting. There are many other better ways to know about a better trainer as he can be adjudged by reading daily racing forms or information can be received through the tracks. A better trainer can be known from the victories, earnings and excellent track records as it force a punter to bet on a horse trained by them.

A good horse trainer always remains stiffer on his horse; the relation between a trainer and a horse is quite strained as it never been easy for a horse trainer to teach. There is times when a trainer has to test limit of his horses to the expectation of race. A good trainer never leaves an effort unturned to make his horse to win a race at any cost. Meanwhile, there are some trainers, who, feel the task is too hard be achieved by a horse and become lax, as this attachment with horse results into failure on the track, so be wary of these emotional sort of trainers to get your desired result while betting on a horse.

After trainer, it is the turn of the jockey that knows very well all the trade secrets of horse racing, especially, veteran ones. They know well how to steer horses according to a track’s nooks and crannies. Jockey should also have winning track record of 10 percent.

Horse racing is synonymous with betting. Many people bet purely for the fun of it; looking at the name of the horse, the name of the jockey, or even obtuse ideas such as the birthday of the jockey. Some people take the betting on races a lot more seriously though, and many earn a living doing it. The top tipsters often have a horse betting system they follow religiously. Here are some of the essential things you should consider if you want to create a successful horse racing betting system: DistanceThe distance when referred to horse racing is how far the horses have to run in order to reach the finishing line. The distance is a crucial factor that you have to weigh up before you pick out the horse that you will lay a bet on. Horses are no different to people. Some are blessed with great stamina and can run for miles and miles. Some have great speed, but can only keep the speed up for short distances. Each horse will have a preferred distance, and it will be your job to know what a particular horse’s favoured distance is. before laying a bet on it. Number of RunnersThe number of runners in a race is also a very important element to consider when betting. A horse’s chance of winning is significantly influenced by the number of contenders in a race. If the field is big, then there is more risk of either accidental contact or blocking of a path through the field. It is more difficult to choose which horse will do well in the race where there are so a lot of runners in a race. The GroundAnother important thing that you should take into consideration when betting on a horse is the kind of ground in which the horse will run. The ground could be referred to a good, soft, heavy, firm or combinations of the above. As with distance, horses will have preferences as to the type of going that they run on, and again it is your job as a betting expert to know this. Checking previous form can often give you a clue because a horses successes will have been recorded as well as the type of ground the success were on. When the Last Race was RunYou need to be aware of a horses training schedule. A horse in the early part of it’s season, may be put out to run in a warm up race. You wouldn’t be surprised to know that this type of race would be a bad one to select to try and pick a horse as a winner. It would be better to find their schedule and see if you can discover what the trainer’s aim for that horse is. Getting Help From The Racing PapersThe racing papers are a mine of information for the budding horse race betting strategist. Each horse will have its racing record laid bare before you. You will be able to assess if the horse is a course winner, a distance winner or a combination of both. The better racing papers may also give you an indication of the horses distance and going preferences as well. Each of these will help you narrow your search for a race winner. Discover 97% rates with this excellent horse betting losses into profits.
